Brief Profile
Nadia Murad is an Iraqi Yazidi human rights activist, survivor, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Born in 1993 in Kocho, Sinjar, Iraq, she was captured by ISIS (Islamic State) in 2014, along with thousands of Yazidi women and girls, and was subjected to horrific abuse. She managed to escape and later became a global advocate for justice, human rights, and the rights of Yazidi survivors.
In 2016, she became a UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking. She also founded Nadia’s Initiative, a nonprofit organization focused on rebuilding communities destroyed by war and supporting survivors of sexual violence.
In 2018, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. Today, she continues to fight for justice and the protection of vulnerable communities.
